This is a "reinvented" museum, which moves freely from art to science, and from the ancient to the modern. While conserving its primary, binary vocation as a museum of fine arts and sciences, it addresses the present through contemporary artists' dialogues with its encyclopaedic collections. For the last 10 years, it has been working with the Réserve Géologique de Haute-Provence and the CAIRN – Centre d'Art to produce and maintain a collection of contemporary art in natural settings. Andy Goldsworthy, herman de vries, Mark Dion, Bernard Plossu, Richard Nonas and other artists who are interested in nature, territory and science have been invited to create works not just in the museum itself but also in the landscapes around it.
