As a protected territory, the Geological Reserve of the Haute-Provence guards the memory of this 300 million year old land. This protected zone of 23,000 hectares was created in 1984 making it the largest geological reserve in Europe and was classified as a protected site by the UNESCO (European Geoparks) in 2000.
In addition to the size of the protected area and to the geological and heritage quality of the sites within its border, the originality of this Geological Reserve lies in the efforts made by its founder (Guy Martini) to create a territory that is explored by hikers, and that brings natural heritage and contemporary art together.
